Hello-
I don't know much about solar so I took my Sprinter van to an RV dealer to have some work done. I quickly realized that they know even less than I. I asked them to stop work and put my system back. I live in a cold climate so I need to remove my battery and store it inside. Do I need to disconnect the panels from the controller? I have always done this but the RV dealer says I do not. The panels are currently hooked up to the control panel but I have my battery inside the house currently. What do I need to do?
Disconnect the panels.... Hook up the battery first then the panels.... I think with your small system it doesn't matter but I wouldn't leave them hooked up in storage...

Thanks Tattoo. That is what I thought. I just need to cover the panels and then disconnect, right? Do I need to make sure the 2 ends don't touch when it is in storage?
No need covering them up just unhook them when you don't have a battery attached... And yes keep the ends away from each other..

batteries can freeze if they are in a heavily discharge state!
of course storing batteries in a heavily discharge state is not good on the battery.
Disconnecting one PV wire from the controller effectively disconnects the panels from the controller.
if ya can't keep the snow off the panels and there are any loads then you'll have a discharged/frozen battery.

Can my batteries freeze?
If your battery is partially discharged, the electrolyte in a lead acid battery may freeze. At a 40% state of charge, electrolyte will freeze if the temperature drops to approximately -16 degrees F. When a battery is fully charged the electrolyte will not freeze until the temperature drops to approximately -92 degrees F.
Yep she said she takes the battery inside... Dang that's cold no wonder it will freeze...
