I have a Chevy van that was professionally customized in 2007. It has an Onan generator, 30A shore power hookup, two 110V outlets, one 12V outlet plug, one group 24 house battery (with no space to upgrade size). The house battery charges off the generator, shore power, or from the alternator when driving (has an isolator). There is also a rooftop AC but I know I'm not going to power that with solar ;-)
I never run the generator as it's super obnoxious, and I rarely have shore power as I mostly boondock. I have upgraded the fridge to a modern top loading DC fridge (Dometic knockoff). I just need a bit more charging power than driving/alternator provides to run the fridge all the time. I believe a 100W panel will be sufficient.
I have a couple questions about connecting the solar into the existing system. I had a previous van with basic solar, but this one is a bit more complicated because I don't fully understand the 30A 110v system. There is a power center/converter but I don't know much about it.
Can I just wire the solar panel to the controller, then the controller into the battery? This will not affect the shore/generator function?
Thanks for any help!
