Does the controller always go into bulk mode early in the day or only if needed? My question is, if my batteries are full, will the controller automatically go to bulk charging? Or will I have to draw them down at night far enough for them to need a bulk charge to start the day? Yes always
and
Yes No
It will ALWAYS bulk charge in the beginning of the day weather you used anything at night or not............ No matter what the voltage is in the battery...... 12.7 or 12.0

The controller goes into bulk mode when it needs to. NO your wrong, it will go into bulk charge as soon as the sun comes up..........

OK I still have a lot to learn Here!! Does the controller always go into bulk mode early in the day or only if needed? My question is, if my batteries are full, will the controller automatically go to bulk charging? Or will I have to draw them down at night far enough for them to need a bulk charge to start the day? if your batteries are FULL they will generally be below boost return voltage of 13.something and will be in bulk each morning. every day if full you start out and the controller wants to get them to 14.? (whatever you controller is set to +/- temp compensation). Being FULL it will not take much energy to get them to 14.?, so that will happen in low light conditions and once that 14.? set pt is met the controller goes into boost which is constant voltage charging (14.?). Renogy controller usually have this set to 2 hrs of constant voltage charging. Add a big load and reduce batt voltage below boost return voltage (what is your's set to?) and bulk starts again, then boost for 2 hrs, then float at a lower set pt voltage. During boost the batt is held at a constant voltage, it takes less and less energy to maintain this voltage as the battery gets fuller and fuller. it takes relative little energy to maintain float voltage. I figured the other day you might see as much as 240 watts 'high noon' (12:15 pm) in seatle wa from a flat (horizontal) panel, you winter results will be much less with such a low sun angle in the winter, dynamic.

The controller goes into bulk mode when it needs to. NO your wrong, it will go into bulk charge as soon as the sun comes up.......... Even when it doesn't need to? I used to have a configuration where an external charger connected to AC, kicked in at night to slow charge my big battery overnight. By morning that battery was fully charged. I don't mind being wrong. Nobody knows it all, but if you bother to bring it up, then you could at least explain why, or point to some helpful information that I could learn from. I don't learn from being hit over the head with a 2x4. While in most configurations, the battery has dropped in voltage by the time the sun rises in the morning, so they are usually coincident. But if the battery is not low enough, you don't need bulk mode, and if you have no power input to the controller, you couldn't do it anyway. So you get bulk mode when needed AND you have an available source of power to drive it, which in a typical configuration, is when the sunlight is strong enough to produce that power. Why is it not possible for both statements to be true? Here is one of the many statements you can find out on the internet, that corroborate each other (from here): Quote (bold highlighting added):

Even when it doesn't need to? Yes, That's all I have to say.............
You can cut and paste all you want..............

I don't have an AC back up.... I'm TOTALLY off grid...........

or point to some helpful information that I could learn from. Sorry I don't have any............ I'm not a cut and paste kind of guy.........
I learned from real life situations.........

Finally something we agree on! You left out the rest of my post...... I learned from real life not what someone told me....... Like you obviously learned from......
When I was a kid I was told, Believe nothing you hear and half of what you see...... It still applies today.......
