Can I connect the Renogy Charge controller to a battery and a standard battery charger to the battery at the same time? Do I need to diode protect either or both when connecting to the battery?

you may have as many chargers connected to a bettery at any time without diodes and other crap!
An RV generally has solar, vehicle alternator charging and utility power, at least 2 at the same time, no issue.
