Trying to run a 12v compressor type fridge (rated at 4.5 amps) off the 20 amp load circuit from my renogy rover mppt but immediately get a short circuit error. Is it not possible to run this type of load from the "load" output?

Is it not possible to run this type of load from the "load" output? Yes you are right it is NOT possible to run it off of your CC.... You will only get error codes...... It should ONLY be hooked to your battery....
The load side on the CC should only be used for very small lights....

Rusty_B, I would expect the rover to handle the full rated 20A load on the load side of the controller. an overload is different from a short circuit and rover should know the difference. look for a short!
if rover can not handle the full rated 20A load then renogy needs to changes its specifications. in rush or surge current should be reported as overload and not short circuit.

That's a great observation..... I wonder if it will still short when it's hooked to the battery?

I can run the fridge off the vehicles 12v outlet with no problems, and I can run other devices like a fan/light off the 12v outlet powered by the load side of the charge controller.

Yours is a common asked question..... I still say it's pulling to much power for the CC.... Yes you should be able to run it but the CC can't do it for some reason...
Just run it directly to the battery?

Rusty_B, the controller provides a lot of features when you use the load terminals, if they don't work then raise hell! Is the current over 20A, is the voltage drop excessive causing the controller to act out, is the battery not large enough, are the wires too puny, ...

When you have the fridge hooked up to the CC do you also have the lights and the fan and what ever else hooked up there also???

Thanks for all the help so far. Yes running it directly to the battery is an option, I just liked the ability to monitor power usage from the CC. I don't think its overloading or voltage drop as the fridge compressor never actually tries to kick on. As soon as I plug in the 12v plug the load circuit shuts off and gives short circuit error, so I'm guessing its seeing something from the fridge the CC doesn't like. I'll tinker with it more today and see if I can figure anything out.

I's start with Renogy support, then I'd consider reverse polarity & wire size from the terminals to the fridge.

So it was something with the fridge itself. Not sure if when it's unplugged it goes into a closed circuit protection or what but holding the power button while turning on the CC load allowed the fridge to turn on as soon as it got power. So for now it appears to be working. Thanks for the help, I'll update if anything changes.
